In doing the research it became clear that two factor authentication was the most secure method of keeping a website safe. The way this method works is by using a second means of authentication of a registered website user in addition to their username and password. The solution from TeleSign incorporated a unique system which sent a secure PIN number to each parent’s phone number at the time the grades were posted. The grades could only be viewed once the PIN number was entered on the website. Since the PIN was designed for a single use it prevented multiple views keeping site access restricted to the parents only.
TeleSign does all the work on their end so users think the secure PIN is coming directly from the school website. The total cost of ownership of the two factor authentication products was extremely low because TeleSign only charged us for the actual number of phone verifications they processed which amounted to a few cents for each verification. They integrated two factor authentication right into our existing site design using a seamless process known as SOAP API which works with virtually any system and site architecture so we didn’t have to purchase any hardware or hire programmers to make it work.
